The word trapiche comes from the Spanish name for the spoked cogwheel used in old sugar mills, and it's an oddly fitting name once you see the pattern, dark spokes radiating out from a central point like wheel spokes frozen inside the crystal.

A French mineralogist named Émile Bertrand first documented this formation in 1879, but he was looking at emeralds from Colombia, not amethyst. Among trapiche gemstones broadly, amethyst carrying this pattern is a newer, rarer discovery.

What actually creates the spoke pattern is genuinely unusual: as the crystal grows, six separate growth sectors expand at slightly different rates, trapping thin lines of other minerals and impurities along the boundaries between them.
